Zoetrope by Peter Hudson
Artist Peter Hudson, creator of several spectacular monumental-scale stroboscopic zoetropes for Burning Man, built this small zoetrope especially for BRAF. In fact, it’s the only zoetrope utilizing slits rather than a strobe light that the “Charon” and “Homourobouros” artist has made to date. Exploring themes of decay and renewal, the piece depicts a tree growing as an apple decays.
Custom “Systemic” art installation by Urbanauts
Artists Sean Orlando (The Nautilus, The Raygun Gothic Rocketship, etc.) and Matthew Passmore (of REBAR) just finished a year-and-a-half-long fellowship at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in partnership with BRAF. Taking on the name “Urbanauts”, they mapped, explored, and reconsidered the unseen infrastructure of urban spaces, examining the structures that lurk behind closed doors and underground. One outcome of their explorations was a series of artworks titled “Systemic,” comprising a complex, entangled network of pipes and valves that challenges viewers to reflect on the space they inhabit and invites them to rethink their relationship to the unseen infrastructure that supports city life. Orlando and Passmore will design and fabricate a site-specific installation in this series for the winner’s home or other site.
Port-O-Gallery Art-A-Potty
Win this auction item and you will enjoy your own personal portable toilet at Burning Man 2014. But wait, there’s more: BRAF will deliver this humble facility and transform it into a blue plastic art gallery for you to enjoy all week. BRAF Executive Director Tomas McCabe will bring cheap champagne for your “opening reception”. The potty will easily accommodate you for the week, but further users may necessitate a servicing (not provided)
Inukshuk Artifact from the Temple of Whollyness
The Inuksuk altar – 15 feet tall and weighing 25 tons – was placed in the axis mundi of the Temple at Burning Man 2013. Inukshuk is an Inuit word meaning image of a person’s spirit, often used as navigation aids. These structures are composed of stacked rocks in a human form. Their traditional meaning is “you are on the right path.” It was sculpted from black igneous basalt stone columns from ancient volcanic eruptions on Mount Adams in Washington State and the Yellowstone hot spot. The ancient basalt stone (approximately 30 million years old) not only had the dignity and gravity to take on 68,000 participant’s grief, fears, and joy but our formidable Inuksuk offering came through the raging flames intact and has become an indelible image for all who witnessed the Temple burn. We are offering you an opportunity to take home a piece of the basalt, split off the larger altar by thermal shock, continuing the sculpture’s transformative journey. The rock artifact has been mounted on a pedestal by Inuksuk lead artist James LaFemina.
